What is your perception of social media, do you think it is a fad or the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution

Social Media is a way of interactive dialogue.  It allows us to communicate in an instant.  Although some may say that this is productive and allows us to communicate faster, I believe it is hindering our interpersonal skills.  It used to be that people would keep diaries and only tell their close friends and family all of their funny stories and personal details of their life.  With the availability of face book and other such social media, those thoughts are plastered for the entire world to see.  I believe if we have the proper balance between the two we can use social media to our advantage.  I understand that our world is becoming more and more electronically based and if we do not keep up the times we will be left behind, but this does not mean that we need to abandon face to face communication skills.
Social media does not seem to be a fad in my estimation.  If anything, social media will become more popular as time goes on.  The older generations do not seem as interested in many of these social media opportunities as the younger generations do, but they are definitely increasing in popularity.  I do not believe it is a fad, social media is probably the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution.  The Industrial Revolution was a massive step and social media seems to be moving forward slower but still at a consistent pace.  Social media can also include the radio which seems to be popular.  It also includes dating sites and sites that allow you to simply vote or as complex as commenting on other peoples comments and rating movies.
Social media is a great way of communicating and should be used to everyone’s advantage, but as I mentioned before I believe we should use it in moderation.  We need to make sure we are communicating with others in person and continually improving our interpersonal skills. :)

  1. Great observation regarding the absolute need to remember and continuously articulate our interpersonal skills! I agree that as we move forward with the social media revolution that we all should not forget the value and importance of actual face-to-face conversation. We must preserve that aspect of humanity as even video chats can't replicate that!

  2. I agree with your statement saying that we need to maintain face to face communication. People are relying more and more or sending messages through facebook and social media sights that they don’t even know how to pick up the phone and call someone. I also like how you said that the older generation is not as interested in social media. i believe this is because they are not as technically inclined as our generation.

  3. Very well said. I agree with using it in moderation and using our interpersonal skills. I think a lot of communication takes place through these sites and its just important to not forget how to actually talk to poeple. I also use facebook to keep in touch with my family members who live in italy. its quick and easy and fast and now since facebook has the video chat too i dont need to use the messenger, so taking advantage of things like that makes especially long distance relationships/communication easier.

  4. I agree with that you are saying. Social media does seem to distract us from our personal conversations face to face. It is allowing us to hide in person what we are really thinking to people we know, but to stangers, we can write all of our thoughts and concerns online to people who will listen (i.e Twitter, Tumblr) because we are scared for what the people we know in person have to say. But its kind of funny too, because my mom and dad are now using facebook, so you are pretty much right on the money about not just are generation and older generations getting into social media which makes it more convenient to keep in touch with family members and long distant friends. :)

  5. I agree with what you are saying Jo. I think the need for balance is imperative. Without balance things can become destructive. People are becoming disconnected from each other. People are spending so much time sitting in front of computers and their mobile devices that they are becoming fat and lazy. When I was a kid we use to play outside. Now kids are glued to screens. This is having a negative effect on more than just physical health. The need to constantly and instantly entertainment is detracting from a person's ability to use their imagination.
